Manny Pacquiao is a "freak athlete" and
Freddie Roach has picked holes in Floyd Mayweather's game, according to
long-time strength and conditioning coach Justine Fortune. But the Australian, a former boxer himself who has recently fought and
beaten virulent cancer in his neck, is also honest enough to admit that
Mayweather is "special" too."Manny's a freak athlete. As far as boxing goes, he's a special athlete.
Every sport has them and he's ours. Floyd's the same. He's a freak
athlete, too. Together they're physical specimens," Fortune told The
Telegraph.
"It's easy getting Manny
fit. It's something we've been doing a long time. We've been together
since 2002 for the first Barrera fight. Freddie was my trainer since
1992. I know what Freddie wants out of a fighter and I know my fighters.
If he tells me what he wants, that's what I give to him.""Freddie wants him on his toes
for twelve rounds, so I'll get him on his toes for fifteen. Their game
plan is their game plan. I get him in shape and Freddie comes up with
the plan and Manny executes it. We get the win."
You've got a
base and we've got a big base. And you just work on top of that. He'll
peak within those two days of the fight. That's exactly where we want
him to peak. We've just got to be careful at this point. He's motivated
for this fight, so there's a tendency to overtrain, which is something a
lot of fighters do. We don't want him to overtrain."
Fortune added: "He's (Manny) a puncher and punchers are born. You can't make a puncher. Floyd isn't a puncher. He can box his arse off and he's a world champion, but he's not known as a banger. Manny is a big puncher. He has super strong legs and he will always be a puncher."Fortune also allayed any fears about Pacman's stresses and strains. "He had some shin splints for two days, big deal, everybody gets them. That was five weeks ago. We iced them down and two days later they were gone. He's had calf cramps but that's just dehydration. You rehydrate."
For Pacquiao, it will be about following a game plan. "If he listens to Freddie, he'll get the win and the KO. Freddie Roach is a great trainer and he's found the holes in Floyd's game. He'll present a plan and Manny will execute it."
